Norwich
”City (pop., 2001: 121,553), administrative and historic county,
Norfolk, England. Located on the River Wensum northeast of
London, it had become an important market centre when it was sacked and occupied by the Danes in the 11th century. It was among the most prosperous English provincial towns for centuries; its economy was fostered by
Edward III, who induced Flemish weavers to settle there, and by the influx of immigrants during the reign of
Elizabeth I. One of England’s largest centres of footwear manufacturing, it features a Norman castle and cathedral. It is the traditional regional capital of
East Anglia and the site of a cathedral founded shortly after the
Norman Conquest.”

Norwich Castle ( 52°37′43″N, 1°17′46″E) was built in 1067 when William the Conqueror (c.1027 - 1087) ordered its construction in order to have a fortification in the city of Norwich, England (William’s only castle in East Anglia). Ninety-eight Saxon homes were demolished to make way for the castle. The original structure was a timber motte and bailey type housing standing on a natural rise in the land augmented by an artificial mound.

In c. 1100 the motte was heightened, and the surrounding ditch deepened. The square keep was built on top of the motte c. 1120 to serve as a Royal Palace. The construction is Caen stone over a flint core. The Keep is c. 95 ft by 90 ft by c. 70 ft high, and is of the hall-keep type, entered at first floor level through an external structure, the Bigod Tower. Unusually for a utilitarian building of this period the exterior is decorated with blank arcading (Castle Rising is the only other comparable keep in this respect).

| VOTATI-L PE BRANCUSI… ! Site-ul celebrei galerii Saatchi din Marea Britanie realizeaza un top al primilor 500 de artisti ai secolului 20, bazat pe voturile internautilor. Romania este reprezentata de Constantin Brancusi si de pictorul Victor Brauner. Nascut in 1876, la Hobita (Gorj), Constantin Brincusi este considerat drept unul dintre cei mai mari sculptori ai secolului 20. Una dintre lucrarile sale, “Pasare in spatiu”, s-a vindut, in 2005, la o licitatie a casei Christie’s din New York, pentru 27,5 milioane de dolari.
